Too often, young people are blamed for gentrification. Whether we are lifelong New Yorkers or moved here for school or new jobs, when we move somewhere with lower rent, media and politicians are quick to blame us. But this thinking isolates young people from their neighbors, while allowing the true drivers of displacement – the real estate industry – to escape accountability.
Youth Against Displacement organizes young people in order to unite with our neighbors and fight the developers who want to drive all of us out of our homes. We identify how these special interests play a heavy-hand in local politics, and often target our City and State elected officials for doing the bidding of the real estate industry instead of working people.
