Build Low Income Housing, No New Jails
No low income housing has been built in Chinatown for over 50 years. Yet in 2019, the City planned to construct a mega jail, the tallest in the world, on city-owned land in the heart of Chinatown as part of the Borough-Based Jail Plan to close Rikers Island, further criminalizing and displacing a vulnerable community.
Our community demands that this administration build 100% low income housing in Chinatown instead, and rehabilitate the closed federal jail on Park Row to permit the closure of Rikers Island. Mayor Mamdani can secure this federal land for City use through one phone call to President Trump. The City has no excuse for continuing to displace our community.
